romeroNO GREATER LOVE

Morning Prayer for the Remembrance of the martyrdom of Archbishop Oscar Romero

Leader: + Come, let us worship Christ the Lord,

People: who for our sake endured temptation and suffering..

Leader: + God, come to my assistance.

People: Lord, make haste to help me.

Psalm 11

All: The Lord looks tenderly on those who are poor.

In the Lord I have taken my refuge. How can you say to my soul: "Fly like a bird to its mountain.

See the wicked bracing their bow; they are fixing their arrows on the strong to shoot upright men in the dark. Foundations once destroyed, what can the just do?"

The Lord is in his holy temple, the Lord, whose throne is in heaven. His eyes look down on the world; his gaze tests mortal men.

The Lord tests the just and the wicked: the lover of violence he hates. He sends fire and brimstone on the wicked; he sends a scorching wind as their lot.

The Lord is just and loves justice: the upright shall see his face.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.

Leader: Lord God, you search the hearts of all, both the good and the wicked. May those who are in danger for love of you, find security in you now, and, in the day of judgment, may they rejoice in seeing you face to face.

All: The Lord looks tenderly on those who are poor.

Canticle of Hannah

1 Samuel 2, 1-10

All: The lowly shall be exalted, the proud shall be humbled.

My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is exalted in my God. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation.

There is no Holy One like you, O Lord, nor any Rock like you, our God. For you are a God of knowledge and by you our actions are weighed.

The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble gird on strength. Those who were full now search for bread, but those who were hungry are well fed.

Both the poor and the rich are of your making; you bring low and you also exalt. You raise up the poor from the dust, and lift the needy from the ash heap.

You make them sit with the rulers and inherit a place of honor. For the pillars of the earth are yours and on them you have set the world.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.

All: The lowly shall be exalted, the proud shall be humbled.

Psalm 10

All: Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.

Why, O Lord, do you stand aloof? Why hide in times of distress?

Proudly the wicked harass the afflicted, who are caught in the devices the wicked have contrived. For the wicked man glories in his greed, and the covetous blasphemes, sets the Lord at naught.

The wicked man boasts, "He will not avenge it." "There is no God," sums up his thoughts.

His ways are secure at all times; your judgments are far from his mind, all his foes he scorns. He says in his heart, I shall not be disturbed; from age to age I shall be without misfortune.

His mouth is full of cursing, guile and deceit; under his tongue are mischief and iniquity. He lurks in ambush near the villages; in hiding he murders the innocent; his eyes spy upon the unfortunate.

He waits in secret like a lion in his lair; he lies in wait to catch the afflicted; he catches the afflicted and drags them off in his net.

He stoops and lies prone till by his violence fall the unfortunate. He says in his heart, "God has forgotten; he hides his face, he never sees."

Rise, O Lord! O God, lift up your hand! Forget not the afflicted! Why should the wicked man despise God, saying in his heart, "He will not avenge it?"

You do see, for you behold misery and sorrow, taking them in your hands. On you the unfortunate man depends; of the fatherless you are the helper.

Break the strength of the wicked and of the evildoer, punish their wickedness; let them not survive. The Lord is king forever and ever, the nations have perished out of his land.

The desire of the afflicted you hear, O Lord; strengthening their hearts, you pay heed to the defense of the fatherless and the oppressed, that man, who is of earth, may terrify no more.

Make our lives blameless, Lord. Help us to do what is right and to speak what is true, that we may dwell in your tent and find rest on your holy mountain.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.

All: Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.

Gospel Reading

"I am the Good Shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. A hired man, who is not a shepherd, and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and devours them. This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, , and I know my sheep and they know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father, and I will lay down my life for the sheep." (From John 10)

Benedictus Domine

The Canticle of Zechariah

All stand and sing the canticle, making the Sign of the Cross as the Canticle begins..

All: For our sake, Christ was obedient, accepting even death.

+ Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,

for he has come to his people & set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty Savior,

born of the house of his servant, David.

Through his holy prophets, he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our forebears, and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father, Abraham, to set us free from the hands of our enemies.

Free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight, all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

To give his people knowledge of salvation, by the forgiveness of all their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God, the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.

All: For our sake, Christ was obedient, accepting even death.

Prayers and Intercessions

With confidence and hope, we come before the Lord and we say, Lord, hear our prayer.

For the leaders of the Church. May they, like the apostles, be filled with the Holy Spirit and following in the footsteps of the Servant of God Oscar Romero, preach to the world of God's unending love for everyone, speaking truth to power, comforting the afflicted, and afflicting the comfortable, we pray to the Lord.

For those who serve in government, may the Holy Spirit empower them to reject corruption and greed, establish justice, and live in peace with all people. Help them to turn their backs on the culture of death and build the civilization of life and love. We pray to the Lord.

For those who have grown lukewarm in their faith, may they be re-born in the Holy Spirit, and helped to confess again that Jesus is Lord to the glory of the Father. Teach all of us to follow the example of the Servant of God Oscar Romero of El Salvador, and incarnate our Faith in our daily lives by practicing the works of mercy, justice, and peace, we pray to the Lord.

For our own faith community, may we never be afraid to follow where the Holy Spirit leads, so that like the Servant of God Oscar Romero, we may discover a greater knowledge of truth and a life filled with love, we pray to the Lord.

For the poor and all who suffer injustice, send the Holy Spirit to comfort them in their affliction. Protect them from all harm and restrain those who would oppress them. Give them the grace and strength to stand against the demonic powers that are arrayed against them.. We pray to the Lord.

For all who have been murdered and tortured by evil and injustice. Welcome them to a place of peace in a land where justice reigns and oppression is no more. Eternal rest grant to them O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. We pray the Lord.

For those who are oppressors and who use violence, torture, war, and murder as instruments of political domination. Teach them to respect the dignity of each human person. Open their eyes, ears, and hearts to hear the cries of their victims for justice. Stop their violence, confound their plans, expose their conspiracies, and take away their power and wealth so they can oppress no more. Lead them into the way of justice, so that they will seek forgiveness for their crimes and do the works of mercy, justice, and peace as reparations for the evil they have done. We pray to the Lord.

Now let us offer together the prayer our Lord Jesus Christ taught us, Our Father. . .

Closing Prayer

Father, in your plan of salvation, your Son Jesus Christ accepted the Cross, and freed us from the power of the enemy. We see before us the example of the Servant of God, Oscar Romero, who following the example of Christ, willingly accepted his Cross for the love and salvation of his people, enduring a cruel death for the sake of the Gospel of justice and peace.

May we come to understand these sacrifices, and incarnate them in our own lives, so that together with all people of good will, we may build the civilization of life and love, to the glory of God, who lives and reigns for ever and ever, Amen.

May Almighty God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless us, Amen.
