SCROLL OF REMEMBRANCE

This page is dedicated to the U.S. Catholic victims of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, both soldiers and civilians, who have been killed in these unjust wars.  It also serves as an indictment of the Catholic Bishops of the U.S. whose response to these wars has been characterized by cowardice, moral laxity and relativism, to the point that they are guilty of material cooperation with the objective evil of unjust war.

This Scroll was compiled by researching the Washington Post’s “Faces of the Fallen” web site which lists casualties provided by the Pentagon.  The military is notorious for under-reporting casualties and we were not able to identify all for whom a Mass of Christian Burial or Memorial Mass was offered.  We would like to see every diocese compile and publish all these names from their parish funeral records so we can have a better idea of what these wars are costing our Church.

While only a few are listed here, we pray and grieve for all victims of war.  If we could list only the civilian murders for which the U.S. is directly or indirectly responsible since the slaughter of the 1991 Gulf War, that list would be hundreds of times longer than the list of all U.S. casualties.  If it were possible to list the un-born who have been murdered (most often along with their mothers), that, too, would be a longer list.  It seems certain that more Iraqi Catholics (mainly Chaldeans) have been killed than U.S. soldiers in both wars.  As Pope Benedict XVI said when he echoed Benedict XV’s comment about WWI:  “War is a useless slaughter that brings hell to earth.”

Almost invariably, priests and bishops who spoke at these funerals showed a complete acceptance of Catholic participation in unjust war, often employing the same clichés used in the secular/military world.  We found only one instance where a priest truly applied the gospel to war, (see Jesse De La Torre under Illinois) yet this is the real support that our religious leaders owe to the souls entrusted to their care.  It is our prayer that meditating on these names will hasten the day when no diocese or parish will be ashamed to preach and teach Jesus’ Gospel of peace and nonviolence.

If you would like to have a name entered on this Scroll or make a correction, please email:  robert@justpeace.org.  Remember to check your parish funeral records.

Please pray for these men and women and their families and

arrange for masses to be celebrated for the repose of their souls

Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them.  May their souls, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Robert Waldrop, Oklahoma City Catholic Worker
