A Holy Day Warning to Politicians, the Selfish Rich and the Politically Well-Connected from the Oscar Romero Catholic Worker House

Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries. Your wealth has rotted away, your clothes have become moth-eaten, your gold and silver have corroded, and that corrosion will be a testimony against you; it will devour your flesh like a fire. You have stored up treasure for the last days. Behold, the wages you withheld from the workers who harvested your fields are crying aloud, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on earth in luxury and pleasure; you have fattened your hearts as on a day of slaughter.

James 5:1-5

Will your sins against the poor send you to HELL?

What did Jesus say about wealth and power?

ONG & OGE (Oklahoma Natural Gas and Oklahoma Gas and Electric) will cut the poor no slack this Christmas, there will be no Christmas moratorium on utility shut-offs. Meanwhile, ONEOK, the owner of ONG, is bragging about the huge increase in its profits for the 3rd quarter of 2005 over the 3rd quarter of 2004. Memo to Jesus from ONG & OGE: "Our holiday wish for you is that you freeze in the dark. We'll help by cutting off your utility services just before Christmas. Nothing personal, you know, it's just bidness."

What does God say to politicians and the politically well connected?

Those who shut their ears to the cry of the poor will themselves also call and not be heard.

Oklahoma's tax coffers runneth over with money due to the increased take of oil and natural gas taxes. What's the word about increased assistance for utility bills for the poor and just wages for school support personnel? The word is - "we'll throw in a pittance - but no raises for school support personnel! We have more important uses for our money." Memo to Jesus from Governor Brad Henry & his Democratic & Republican allies in the State Legislature: "Go away."

How does God define blasphemy?

What do mean by crushing my people and grinding down the poor when they look to you? Those who oppress the poor blaspheme their maker, but the one who is kind to the needy glorifies God.

Oklahoma's school districts and state governance system exploits people desperate for jobs by paying shamefully low wages to school support personnel such as cafeteria workers, janitors, and teachers' aides. Never mind the fact that our schools could not operate without these loyal, dedicated, and competent workers. Our education leadership thinks that these people aren't worth much, so they don't pay them much money. Memo to Jesus from Oklahoma's education bureaucrats: "If you don't like your pay, get a better job. In the meantime, just suffer. If you or your wife get pregnant, remember that abortion is cheaper than raising kids."

What does the Bible say about the comfortable and selfish?

How can God's love survive in those who have enough of this world's goods and yet they close their hearts to their brothers and sisters when they see them in need? Children, let us love in deed and in truth and not merely talk about it.

Oklahoma's urban renewal & road building programs have destroyed thousands of units of low income housing over the last 20 years. OSU is ready to destroy more "low-rent housing" to boost its athletic programs. The I-40 Crosstown Freeway relocation project is destroying the Walnut Grove neighborhood & part of the Riverside neighborhood. These perennial pogroms raise the rents of the poor (by reducing the supply of low-rent housing) & that increases their economic misery. More economic desperation means more divorce, more violence against women and children, more alcoholism, more drug abuse, more alienation, more crime, more school drop-outs, and more abortions. Memo to Jesus from Oklahoma's urban planning & road building commissars: "GET OUT OF OUR WAY! What's yours is ours, and if you don't like it, that's tough."

Why did Jesus say the rich who oppress the poor are going to Hell?

Inasmuch as you have done this unto these, the least of my brothers and sisters, you have done it unto me.

A Holy Day Message from God to all Politicians, Corporations, and the Rich:

Woe to those who enact unjust statutes and who write oppressive decrees, depriving the needy of judgment and robbing my people's poor of their rights, making widows their plunder, and orphans their prey! What will you do on the day of punishment, when ruin comes from afar? To whom will you flee for help? Where will you leave your wealth, lest it sink beneath the captive or fall beneath the slain? For all this, his wrath is not turned back, his hand is still outstretched.

Hearken, you who are in power over the multitude and lord it over throngs of peoples! Because authority was given you by the Lord and sovereignty by the Most High, He will probe your works and scrutinize your counsels. Judgment is stern for the exalted! The lowly may be pardoned out of mercy,

but the mighty shall be mightily put to the test. . . For those in power, a rigorous scrutiny looms.
